Carolyn is part of a whole new breed of brilliant documentary photographers, many of whom are working for national geographic. Her work mainly focuses on central asia. Look at the "Paradise Rivers" work on her website here. Her use of colour and variation in composition blows my mind. She can be simple or complex as she pleases.
I've always been a little wary of national geographic. The whole "perpetuating stereotypes of the other" thing frustrates me. However i'm really in love with the new generation of photographers they now use such as Carolyn, Jonas Bendiksen and michael christopher brown. I'm not sure if these photographers are actually any better at avoiding the idea of perpetuating stereotypes than the older generation. They all mainly work in central asia and the outskirts of the former soviet union, places where as a western audience we have less fixed visual preconceptions in mind. Therefore they can get away with making images that might completely misrepresent these places in a way that is now impossible to do in many other parts of the world, as we know what such places should look like.
I really hope central asia does look like Carolyn's images. That way her representation is accurate, and also the places look super interesting.
